Keyless Entry
With BMW Digital Key, you can lock and unlock your vehicle with just a tap on your smartphone. To begin, download the app from Apple Wallet or Google Play Store and follow the on-screen instructions. Once you have connected your mobile phone compatible to your BMW Connected Account, you can share your account with up to five friends or family members who also use the app. If someone accepts your invitation, they can unlock and start your car without having to carry an actual key. The feature is functional even if your phone is in airplane mode, with or without a data connection.
The convenience of the BMW Smart Key goes well beyond unlocking your vehicle. You can use the BMW Smart Key to unlock the trunk, control your HVAC, check the fuel range and more. You can also precondition the interior of your vehicle to make it cool or warm when you arrive. The only limitation is that your BMW must have Comfort Access installed at the factory or retrofitted by an BMW authorized dealer. You can verify if your car has Comfort Access by using a no-cost online BMW VIN decoder. The window sticker will read "S322A" in the event that you are equipped with this feature.
When you're ready for setting up a new BMW Digital Key, start by making sure your smartphone is fully charged and in the same space as your vehicle. Place your iPhone into the smartphone tray, then select 'Start pairing' from the BMW Connected App on your vehicle. Once your phone and the vehicle are paired you can remove your iPhone from the tray.

Battery Replacement
If the batteries on your BMW key fob run out and you're wondering, "Can I replace the battery in a BMW fob?" The answer to this depends on the type of BMW fob that you have. For instance, older diamond-shaped BMW key fobs are not designed to have the batteries replaced. The backplate is attached and removing it could cause damage to the fob. The CR2450 battery or CR2032 can be replaced in newer fobs by removing the fob.
For the more popular smart key models (like those in the 1, 3 5, 7, and X series), you can press a small tab to remove the valet key made of metal, then open up the access port with a screwdriver or another thin tool. This should reveal a tiny groove. Utilize the tool to push the tab in and then remove the valet key to reveal the CR2032 battery inside. Replace the battery with a brand new one and then put the cover back on.
If you have a Display Key with touchscreen, you will need to take a different approach. The Display Key is water resistant but not as waterproof as an ordinary fob. You must take care to avoid exposing to excessive water. It is able to withstand even a trip through the washer, but it's best to treat it like an iPhone. Don't worry about rain, as long as it is kept clear of water.
